Secret Valley Services – Part 1

If you’re coming to the valley with tourist eyes, there are plenty of secrets tucked

away in places that might not seem so obvious or easily Googleable (indeed, that is a

word).   We’ve put together a smattering of treasures for this two-part series of

things hidden in plain sight:

The C&S Store and is the local spot for crawlers and worms (with a side of local

knowledge about fishing in the area), the 1836 Country Store has homemade fudge

and chocolates of all varieties,  and Bartleby’s will sell you a tasty cup of Mocha Joe’s

coffee to take upstairs for sitting on the couch or browsing their ever-changing sale

section.   Need curtains, a slipcover or pillowcases?  Head over to the boutique

Beyond Imagination, where Melinda has a custom sewing operation burried in the

 back of her shop.

If you’ve got the bug, Chapman’s In Town Antiques is a very small sampling of their

barn—which they’ll open up for you just about anytime if you ask nicely. Jessica’s

Closet, on Haystack Road, gives new life to formalwear and has a special knack for

finding just the right item to borrow.  The ladies at the Fashion Plate service all

kinds of upscale consignment—including menswear! Christian will do a superior job

of detailing your car while you shop from Ratu’s awesome growler selection—in

addition to the hard stuff he’s got a rotating root or ginger beer as well as

 kombucha.

The MOOver is a free bus service that takes you all across Southern Vermont. Hike

the Valley trail and ride free back to Dover, Wilmington, Whitingham or Readsboro.

Easy enough to ride in for the night and then hop back on the bus to Dover after

dinner at Folly, who will be celebrating their first summer season this year, and a

nightcap (or two) at the Cask & Kiln. Or do the reverse and hit up the Snowbarn or a

movie at the MHCA and ride south in style until 10:30pm.   For more freebies, check

out a parks-pass from Pettee Memorial Library and hit up the Bennington Museum

or Molly Stark State Park for free thanks to their exchange program (the MOOver

will get you there for free too—they service Bennington and Brattleboro multiple

 times a day).

NatureSpa at Mount Snow offers classes year round—drop ins welcome for single or

multi-pass options for everything from Yoga to Aquafit and you don’t have to be a

hotel guest.  You can buy a day-pass for use of the pool, sauna and racquetball at the

Crafts Inn whether or not your staying.  Kelly at TimberCreek is a one-stop shop for

knowledge about the area and Nordic Skiing (that’s cross country kids) and there

are fewer good ways to spend a silent and sweaty afternoon than snowshoeing on

his lovely groomed paths—head out for just the afternoon and the price is right, or

spend a rainy afternoon at the sauna inside.

There are plenty of weekly specials to sate you after all that adventure, some local

favorites include or the three course Thursday option at Mangia e Beve or for

another Italian option try ½ price Tuesday at Toscanella’s Pizza.  Be prepared to

wait and call in advance for your pick-up, or choose the quick valley delivery option

from North Star Pizza.  Our next installment of secrets will focus on food and arts,

start your planning by checking out the season calendar for Historic Memorial Hall

 now.
