SUMMARY:Sensory Group at the Pool Nature Center Hosted by Vermont Museum of Natural History- 'An Immense World'
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in diversity in nature? Join Vermont Museum of Natural History’s Sensory Study Group! Starting Tuesday June 11th at 6pm\, we will be meeting for the first of ten Study groups looking at Ed Yong’s book “An Immense World”. The focus of the book is on animal senses\, (both those familiar to us and those that we do not have) and how those senses shape how animals experience their world. As part of these discussions\, we are going to consider how diversity in nature can inform how we address diversity in humans. This information\, and the “different\, not better or worse” thread that moves through the book will integrate into how we consider ‘other’ of all stripes be they two legged\, four legged or ten. We will also discuss ways to develop resources for the visually or hearing-impaired visitors to the Nature Center and especially in conjunction with our Accessible trail being built this summer. We will be thinking about more than just wheelchairs. \nMeetings will be at 6:00 every other Tuesday until October 15. We’ll do a couple chapters at a time to really explore not only the content of the book but also bring in some outside information. We’ll have food and time for talking and thinking. A limited number of copies of the book are available for those who need one. Please reach out to Michael Clough at michael.clough@vermontmuseum.org or Mary Wright at mary.wright@vermontmuseum.org  if you are interested in participating or would like to learn more. The Sensory Study Group is supported in part by a Vermont Humanities project grant.

DESCRIPTION:XANADU \, the 2007 award-nominated musical about following your dreams despite the limitations that others set for you\, will be presented by the Deerfield Valley Players at 7:30 pm on August 14\, 15\, 16\, and 17 at Memorial Hall\, 14 West Main Street\, Wilmington\, Vermont.\n\nXANADU is a comedy jukebox musical adapted for the stage from the 1980’s movie of the same name. While the film was a box office flop\, the 2007 Broadway musical is an absolute gem of 1980’s cheesy dialogue and disco.\n\nIt features an unconventional campy story that blends the golden age of 1940’s musicals and 1980’s new wave sound.  Mythological Greek muses come to life after being sketched by a surfer/dude sidewalk artist in Venice\, California.\nCharacters whirl around in a roller disco\, and the pop sound track sets the tone for a 90 minute fan-favorite show.\n\nThe production is directed by Caden Ari Adair\, who will also play the leading role.  Barbara Lipstadt\, founder of the Deerfield Valley Players\, is the musical director.  Local actors include Carrie Blake\, Joanne Bourbeau\, George Adair\, Hillary Smite\, AJ Kuusinen\, Mary Reilly\, Bashtian Morehead\, Jo Swani\, Nikhil Swani\, and Steve Teisch. John Iverson will provide lighting and sound and the set was designed by Caden Adair.\n\nTickets (adults – $18 and students – $12) are available at events.com and Bartleby’s Book Store in Wilmington. Performance rights are from Music Theater International and the show is sponsored by Friends of Historic Memorial Hall.

SUMMARY:Sensory Group at the Pool Nature Center Hosted by Vermont Museum of Natural History- 'An Immense World'
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in diversity in nature? Join Vermont Museum of Natural History’s Sensory Study Group! Starting Tuesday June 11th at 6pm\, we will be meeting for the first of ten Study groups looking at Ed Yong’s book “An Immense World”. The focus of the book is on animal senses\, (both those familiar to us and those that we do not have) and how those senses shape how animals experience their world. As part of these discussions\, we are going to consider how diversity in nature can inform how we address diversity in humans. This information\, and the “different\, not better or worse” thread that moves through the book will integrate into how we consider ‘other’ of all stripes be they two legged\, four legged or ten. We will also discuss ways to develop resources for the visually or hearing-impaired visitors to the Nature Center and especially in conjunction with our Accessible trail being built this summer. We will be thinking about more than just wheelchairs. \nMeetings will be at 6:00 every other Tuesday until October 15. We’ll do a couple chapters at a time to really explore not only the content of the book but also bring in some outside information.
