SUMMARY:Sensory Group at the Pool Nature Center Hosted by Vermont Museum of Natural History- 'An Immense World'
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in diversity in nature? Join Vermont Museum of Natural History’s Sensory Study Group! Starting Tuesday June 11th at 6pm\, we will be meeting for the first of ten Study groups looking at Ed Yong’s book “An Immense World”. The focus of the book is on animal senses\, (both those familiar to us and those that we do not have) and how those senses shape how animals experience their world. As part of these discussions\, we are going to consider how diversity in nature can inform how we address diversity in humans. This information\, and the “different\, not better or worse” thread that moves through the book will integrate into how we consider ‘other’ of all stripes be they two legged\, four legged or ten. We will also discuss ways to develop resources for the visually or hearing-impaired visitors to the Nature Center and especially in conjunction with our Accessible trail being built this summer. We will be thinking about more than just wheelchairs. \nMeetings will be at 6:00 every other Tuesday until October 15. We’ll do a couple chapters at a time to really explore not only the content of the book but also bring in some outside information. We’ll have food and time for talking and thinking. A limited number of copies of the book are available for those who need one. Please reach out to Michael Clough at michael.clough@vermontmuseum.org or Mary Wright at mary.wright@vermontmuseum.org  if you are interested in participating or would like to learn more. The Sensory Study Group is supported in part by a Vermont Humanities project grant.

The focus of the book is on animal senses\, (both those familiar to us and those that we do not have) and how those senses shape how animals experience their world. As part of these discussions\, we are going to consider how diversity in nature can inform how we address diversity in humans. This information\, and the “different\, not better or worse” thread that moves through the book will integrate into how we consider ‘other’ of all stripes be they two legged\, four legged or ten. We will also discuss ways to develop resources for the visually or hearing-impaired visitors to the Nature Center and especially in conjunction with our Accessible trail being built this summer. We will be thinking about more than just wheelchairs. \nMeetings will be at 6:00 every other Tuesday until October 15. We’ll do a couple chapters at a time to really explore not only the content of the book but also bring in some outside information. How about two? \nMount Snow will be hosting our annual Oktoberfest with a re-imagined format of new and old. \nCome join us on Saturday October 5 and Saturday October 12 from 11am-5pm for a more traditional spin on the world-renowned festival. \nThese events will offer free admission and guests will see some of their favorite winter hangouts like Cuzzins\, Station Tap Room\, and 1900’ Burger transformed into traditional German bier halls offering a diverse selection of domestic\, imported\, and local seasonal beers\, ciders\, and other beverages. \nTraditional Oktoberfest fare will be available in addition to a variety of local vendors and food trucks. \nThe base area will be bumping with live music\, games\, and activities for all ages. Also returning this year\, after a much too long hiatus\, will be the Mount Snow Oktoberfest Craft Fair. Guests will be able to stroll the base area and visit dozens of local and regional crafters showcasing a wide variety of offerings. \nWe are also excited to announce that we have partnered with our friends at von Trapp Brewing to host preliminary qualifying rounds of the Vermont State Steinholding Championships! The winners of the men’s and women’s rounds will be invited to represent Mount Snow at von Trapp Brewing for the Vermont State Championship Finals!
