Mount Olga Fire Tower
Mount Olga Fire Tower

A hike to the summit of Mount Olga Fire Tower offers a quick but rewarding adventure with one of the best view-to-effort ratios in southern Vermont. At the top, visitors are greeted by a historic fire tower—often open for climbing—that delivers sweeping 360° views over the Deerfield Valley, Mount Snow, and the surrounding Green Mountain National Forest. It’s an ideal hike for anyone looking to maximize scenery without committing to a long trek, making it especially popular for families, casual hikers, and those chasing sunrise or peak fall foliage. Whether you take the quick access road or opt for a more traditional wooded trail, the payoff at the summit is consistently impressive.
Hogback Mountain Road (Fire Tower Road) – Easiest & Most Popular
Distance: ~0.5 miles (one way)
Difficulty: Easy
Time: 15–30 minutes
This is the shortest and most accessible route to the summit. Starting from a small roadside pull-off on Rt 9 at the Metcalf Distillery, the trail follows a wide gravel road that steadily climbs through mixed forest to the fire tower. The grade is gentle, making it a great option for families, casual hikers, or anyone looking for a quick reward.
At the top, you’ll reach the fire tower with expansive views of the Deerfield Valley and southern Green Mountains—a big payoff for minimal effort.
👉 Best for: Quick visits, sunset views, beginners
Mount Olga Trail (from Route 9) – Classic Wooded Ascent
Distance: ~1.5 miles (one way)
Difficulty: Moderate
Time: 1–1.5 hours
Cost: $5 for parking at the Molly Stark State Park
This is the traditional hiking route and offers a more immersive forest experience. Starting at the Molly Stark State Park, the trail climbs gradually through hardwood forest before becoming steeper as you approach the summit.
It’s a steady, enjoyable hike with a bit more elevation gain than the road approach, giving it a more “earned” feel when you reach the tower.
👉 Best for: A short but proper hike, fall foliage, quieter experience
