Gallery Wright’s new exhibition at Bartleby’s Reading Room is “Winter Sun: New Work by Rich Gombar". Rich paints atmosphere and light with maybe some building thrown in. Rich has been painting in this vein since college, quite a few moons ago. Sometimes I get a painting from Rich and the back has two or three dates on it, often spanning decades. A simple landscape with a barn and it took him twenty years to get it right. Rich perseveres. Of Gallery Wright's painters, Rich’s simple landscapes are the ones that prompt people to ask how long did it take him to do that? The thought being that the simplicity of forms in the painting equals its ease of execution. What is harder to detect is the subtle working of the paint, how just the right light quality is rendered without much ado. Painting like this is like watching a plant grow, without access to trick photography nothing much seems to be happening. Growth in many aspects of our lives is like that, persevere, endure, persevere. Gombar’s paintings mark the great beauty we sometimes glimpse for our efforts. Rich’s landscapes will be at Bartleby’s on West Main St until February 10th. Bartleby’s is open daily from 10-6. Gallery Wright is located at 7 North Main St and is open Thursdays through Mondays 10-5. 802-464-9922 , www.gallerywright.com or gallerywright.blogspot.com for more info.

The Vermont Jazz Center is excited to present saxophonist Tia Fuller in concert with pianist Shamie Royston (her sister), bassist Mimi Jones and drummer Rudy Royston (her brother-in-law) on Saturday, February 11th at 8:00 PM. This powerhouse group will perform a selection of exuberant, tightly arranged originals and edgy standards. Their high energy and spot-on precision is testament to each individual’s extraordinary level of musicianship and the confidence and freedom they’ve cultivated after years of playing together. Even during her tenure with Beyoncé, Tia never stopped working as a jazz musician. She believes that “jazz is a lifelong art form that allows us to come into any situation and make it work while also being spontaneous if need be.” Her jazz credits illustrate her commitment and dedication to the art form and include tours, recordings and concerts with Nancy Wilson, Wycliffe Gordon, John Faddis, JoAnne Brackeen, Ralph Peterson, T.S. Monk, Steve Turre, Don Byron, Rufus Reid to name a few. General admission is .00, .00 for students with valid ID. Purchase tickets online at www.vtjazz.org, at In the Moment, downtown Brattleboro, or call the VJC ticket line, 802-254-9088, ext. 1. Tickets can also be purchased at the door. This concert is handicapped accessible, but please call in advance (802 – 254 - 9088) if someone in your party will require the use of an elevator. Purchase your tickets early. It is anticipated that this exciting concert will sell out quickly!
